This is the ultimate gym snack, and I'm genuinely surprised more lifters don't know about it. Eighteen grams of protein with almost no prep. You can go from frozen bag to finished snack in under 15 minutes, and it requires basically zero cooking skill. If you can boil water and stir a pan, you can make this. Pop them out of the pods while watching a game instead of reaching for chips, and you're getting real protein instead of empty carbs.

The garlic situation here is aggressive, and that's intentional. I use a full eight cloves because the garlic flavor needs to be loud enough to hit you through the pods. When you suck the edamame out of the pod, you should be getting garlic, salt, sesame, and heat all at once. The sriracha and red pepper flakes bring a one-two punch of spice. The sriracha is immediate and vinegary, while the red pepper flakes have a slower, lingering burn. The capsaicin from the chili flakes also has a slight thermogenic effect that can help during a cut, which is a nice bonus on top of a snack that's already dialed in nutritionally.

I keep a bag of frozen edamame in my freezer at all times specifically for this recipe. It's my go-to when I check my macros at 8pm and realize I'm short on protein for the day. Fifteen minutes later, I've got a bowl of something that actually tastes good and closes the gap. No protein shake required.

The Protein Upgrade

Plain steamed edamame already delivers solid protein at about 17g per cup, but most people find it bland and boring. This recipe keeps the protein intact while transforming the flavor with garlic, sesame, and chili, making it something you'll actually want to eat regularly. The sesame seeds add an extra gram of protein per serving.

Spicy Garlic Edamame

18g protein per serving

Ingredients

  • 1 lb frozen edamame (in pods) 18g protein
  • 8 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sriracha (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp sugar

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the frozen edamame and cook for 4-5 minutes until tender. Drain well and pat dry with paper towels. Removing excess water is important for getting the sauce to stick.
  2. Heat the sesame oil and vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Sauté for about 1 minute until the garlic is fragrant and just starting to turn golden. Don't let it burn.
  3. Add the drained edamame to the skillet. Toss to coat in the garlic oil.
  4. Drizzle in the soy sauce and sriracha. Toss everything together over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes so the sauce coats the pods and reduces slightly.
  5. Transfer to a serving bowl. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and an extra pinch of salt if desired. Serve warm and eat by popping the beans out of the pods.

Boost Your Protein

  • Shell the edamame before cooking for easier eating and to make a great salad topper.
  • Double the batch, leftovers keep in the fridge for 2-3 days and taste great cold.
  • Pair with a protein shake for a post-workout combo totaling 40g+ protein.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • No sriracha? Use sambal oelek or any hot sauce.
  • No sesame oil? Use chili oil for a different kick.
  • Swap soy sauce for coconut aminos to make it soy-free.
  • No edamame? Use shelled lupini beans for a similar high-protein snack.
